Neuron Volume 48 Issue 3 November 3, 2005: http://www.neuron.org/
This issue of Neuron features a series of reviews on sensory systems biology. At a fundamental level, the core functions of all of the sensory modalities in all species are the same—to respond to a specific peripheral stimulus (whether it be a smell, a flash of light, a taste, a sound, or a touch) and translate that stimulus into neuronal signals which are ultimately processed to create for the organism an internal representation of the external world. The reviews in this issue are each focused on a particular aspect of sensory systems biology, but together they bring into view the overall themes and questions that guide research in this exciting field. In conjunction with this special review issue, we will also be highlighting on our website a selection of some of the exciting papers related to sensory systems that Neuron has published in 2005. These featured research articles will be freely accessible through the Neuron website until November 23rd.
